FILM CHOICE FORMONDAY 4 JANUARY

In a nod to Brexit, at our last meeting, participants votedfrom a selection of European arthouse films. In our first meeting of 2021, Jonwill lead a conversation about Pain and Glory, Pedro Almodovar's semi-autobiographicalfilm: the story of a famous film director, now living in self-imposed isolation, and looking back at his life and to some extent career. It was an award-winningrole for Antonio Banderas as the director's alter ego and there is plenty toget our teeth into here.

WATCH Pain and Glory on Amazon Prime for 9.99 or with a free trial on Mubi. Information here.

PLEASE NOTE WE WILLNOT BE SHOWING THE FILM AT THE DISCUSSION, SO YOU NEED TO WATCH IT BEFOREHAND.

How No TicketRequired Works

Discussions take place on fortnightly Mondays at 8pm. By theThursday prior, Watermans will release a short video from Jon Daviesintroducing the film. It can be watched on Watermans' website or YouTube. Jonwill give a bit of background to the week's film and ask some questions to getyou thinking. Watch Jon's video by clicking 'Play Trailer' above.

You'll then have until Monday to watch the film at home onan easily-accessible streaming platform such as Curzon Home Cinema or BBCiPlayer and to book your space on the video call.

On Monday at 8pm, we'll get together on via video callingplatform Zoom for a short presentation from Jon and a chance to discuss thefilm... as well as vote on what the next week's film should be.

Don't worry if you're no Zoom expert: it's very simple. Wewill send you a link by 5pm on the day of the event, and our friendly boxoffice team will be available from 7.30pm to help you get online if you haveany problem at all. Please note you only need to book one ticket per screen, even if more of you are joining on that screen.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

Theatre MAD

Their UK and International grant-making strategy is based on five criteria that raise awareness, educate, and provide care and support for the most vulnerable in society. A host of fundraising events, including Bucket Collections, Late Night Cabarets, West End Eurovision, West End Bares and A West End Christmas continue to raise funds for projects both in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.
