Neil Edmond - Knocker

Anorak comedy as a market researcher tells us about his (none too exciting) life on the doorsteps of Britain, reports back on his survey in a random part of Edinburgh designed for him by yesterday’s audience, then takes your suggestions for tomorrow’s research so the whole cycle can repeat again.

Luckily for us, Neil Edmond is a wonderful comedy creation – the sort of sad, obsessive bloke (and it is always a bloke) that the likes of Steve Coogan could easily have dreamt up.

Unluckily for Neil Edmond, he’s for real – this guy really was a door-to-door market researcher for three years, and he’s distilled his experience of multiple-choice research and tick lists for the likes of the Liver Marketing Board into an unexpected little gem of a one-hour show for our pleasure.

He’ll take you through the delights of door-knocking in all weathers, past the diseases, afflictions and the less-than-lovely members of the public that your average door-knocker has to contend with, through to the rivalry between the workers on the doorstep coal-face, versus the safe, easy life of the cold callers from the hated call centres.

All of this is done with charm and a slightly amateurish, nervous panache which makes it work so well. You really do believe that he is eager to please, capturing your opinions and views along the way. Watch out for the audience feedback section at the end where you can help influence future shows. He’s a nice enough man, but like your reviewer, you may wish to opt out of the ‘this show needs more nudity’ tick-box.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

Theatre MAD
The Make A Difference Trust fights HIV & AIDS one stage at a time. Their UK and International grant-making strategy is based on five criteria that raise awareness, educate, and provide care and support for the most vulnerable in society. A host of fundraising events, including Bucket Collections, Late Night Cabarets, West End Eurovision, West End Bares and A West End Christmas continue to raise funds for projects both in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.

The Blurb

As International Query Board UK’s only long-serving door-to-door interviewer, Neil Edmond - armed with a broken clipboard, puny incentives, inappropriate footwear and an unflagging commitment to the Market Researcher’s Code Of Conduct - must persuade a hostile public to part with their precious opinions.
