From the Israeli Palestinian conflict, via Iran and ISIL, much of what we hear about the Middle East is couched in the language of ancient religious hatreds and as the inevitable outcome of religion's presumed divisiveness " but how important is religion really as an explanatory variable in the region and what are the dangers in over stating it?
