Merkins have been performative since their inception, whether it be to conceal the appearance of STDs, to show off your health by sporting a long thick mane of lip covering locks or as a comedy focal point up on stage.
In this two hour workshop for the merkin curious, brought to you by Aghh! Zine and Claire, Devils Dyke Networks resident textile obsessive, many things will happen!
You will get to express yourself through the merkin, learn the technique of needle-felting and generally have a fun, silly and performative time with elements of serious discussion thrown in.
...and most importantly we will be making our own MERKINS!
If you wish to embellish your piece with personal contributions please do bring some of your own hair along to combine with the curly non human contributions we will be providing. And no, we don't mean pubes...these would probably be too short and coarse to use with much success, although if you feel daring we welcome you to try.
At the end of the workshop, you will get to take home your fabulous personalised masterpiece of furry glory for use in whatever creative endeavour you see fit.
No previous crafting experience needed and all materials will be provided.
CONTENT WARNINGS: Merkins, merkin history, discussion of pubic hair. We will
be using sharp felting needles: you will need some dexterity to use these
without stabbing your hand.
This event will be held in our downstairs space (in the side room at The
Actors).
