A tall and thin Edwin Van Der Sar lookalike rambled up to the mic and proceeded to announce that he was in fact Luke and not just one of the audience who fancied a go. Nor indeed was he a retired Dutch goalkeeper, as he explained later on. The audience was sparse and the atmosphere wasn’t helped by the not so faint applause and gales of laughter coming from other venues deep in the Underbelly catacombs. To be fair, Luke had some strong off the cuff material relating to the small crowd. He began with a little audience interaction and it was refreshing, but also necessary given the audience size, to see him befriend individuals rather than humiliate them. Therefore by the time he began the bulk of his material it was if someone was telling their problems to some mates in the pub.
This laid back atmosphere continued throughout the show as Luke discussed material relating to his family and the troubles he encounters with both his girlfriend and daughter, culminating in a love song to remedy the situation. The whole experience was enjoyable and easy going although largely unexceptional. Whilst he has a strong sense of comic timing and misdirection, at times he did appear to stumble and become somewhat distracted. Fun but forgettable.
