Listen To The Audience - A Comedy Workshop
  • London Fringe

See more details on our website

What is a comedian without an audience? A babbling fool? Or a pending genius waiting for their moment to shine!

In this comedy workshop we take lessons and exercises from clown and improvised comedy to help you better listen to, understand and react to the audience.

The audience is an instrument to play and it changes every night, your job is to learn how to play this different instrument for every show.

Giving the exact same delivery to a small basement in Kentish Town for a group of other comedians may fail to land at the main stage at the Soho Theatre. This workshop will help you do gauge the temperature of the room and adapt.

No experience in comedy or performing is required for this workshop. The exercises and lessons do not need any prior knowledge to be effective. Just come along and jump right in! If you want to have a taster in clowning and comedy, this is also the right place to look.

If you've taken this workshop before, come and give it another go! We mix up the exercises each time it's run and you can't get enough practice! (Also it's just really fun )

What do you need to know?Suitable for any experience, from complete beginners to seasoned performersWe take lessons from clown and improvised comedy to help us understand how the audience is feeling and adjust our performance accordinglyExpect lots of movement, physicality and laughterThere's a mixture of group and solo time in front of the classAre you...A stand-up? - know when to drop the script and become comfortable trusting your instincts on stageA clown/ alternative/ character comedian? - tune into what part of your act is working and give the audience more of what they wantAn improviser? - develop your instincts for when a character or reference is loved by the audience and bring it back later in the showAn actor? - try out a different way of playing to the audienceA public speaker? - pick up on when your audience is engaged and when you need to shake up your speech to reinvigorate them

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

Theatre MAD
The Make A Difference Trust fights HIV & AIDS one stage at a time. Their UK and International grant-making strategy is based on five criteria that raise awareness, educate, and provide care and support for the most vulnerable in society. A host of fundraising events, including Bucket Collections, Late Night Cabarets, West End Eurovision, West End Bares and A West End Christmas continue to raise funds for projects both in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.
