Ladies In Waiting: Brownie Re-union

Set in what could be an authentic Guide hut in the Pleasance, this show is built around a 25th reunion of an 80's Brownie troop as Brown Owl looks back at her girls and we get to see 'where are they now?' through a series of sketches.

Brown Owl herself is (somewhat disconcertingly) a bloke with a beard, and accompanied by two women, the troop of three play all the various roles.

The sketches were a bit hit and miss, with some of the successes being a can't-be-bothered fitness instructor, an Essex-girl Judge Julie, and an over-the-top granny and mummy having an argument using the baby as a proxy. These were offset however by the greater number of skits that didn't quite hit the mark, from a French lost-property person at the airport, through a changing-room assistant who is far from helpful, to a belaboured re-telling of the old nuns-in-a-car gag.

There were laughs of recognition from a few older ladies in the room, who I guess were former Brownies themselves, but the rest of the room didn't seem to get it quite as much.

If you can Lend A Hand to this show by bringing along your own Brownie memories, then it's probably for you, but for the rest of us it doesn't quite qualify for its Entertainment badge.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

Theatre MAD
The Make A Difference Trust fights HIV & AIDS one stage at a time. Their UK and International grant-making strategy is based on five criteria that raise awareness, educate, and provide care and support for the most vulnerable in society. A host of fundraising events, including Bucket Collections, Late Night Cabarets, West End Eurovision, West End Bares and A West End Christmas continue to raise funds for projects both in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.

A character-driven comedy show, about a group of Brownies who were selected for a special event in the 80s, which catches up with them 25 years later to see if they really did 'keep their promise'.
