La Clique Royale is possibly the least family friendly circus extravaganza you'll find in Edinburgh and it's not to be missed. Filled with breathtaking circus performances, magic tricks, a little burlesque here and there, and a drag Queen of England, La Clique presents a show of wonders and laughter.
HRH the Queen (Gerry Connolly) graciously opens the show with a speech unlike anything you've heard her utter before. Full of quips and innuendo, Freudian slips and foul language, Connolly’s fantastic impression of Her Majesty presiding over the circus is bound to make you laugh.
With a little wave of her hand, she passes the spotlight to a burlesque acrobatic bird of paradise act on aerial silks. The physical stunts the men perform in the air, and even on top of a set of suitcases, are astounding. One young acrobat is even able to change his clothes with his feet, while doing complicated handstands.
Paul Zenon and Mikelangelo bring in the comic relief of this spectacular spectacle. Zenon as the MC, magician, and comedian of the show, produces magical slights of hand and tricks that at one point defy – no, rely on – physics. Mikeangelo as the Balkan Elvis is a cabaret performer at his best. He sways and croons, perhaps with an accordion, but especially with lyrics unfit for undefiled ears.
Then add the Wau Wau Sisters’ Guns ‘N’ Roses trapeze act with twirling stunts and beer drinking, and Agent Lynch’s hilarious Bavarian milkmaid act. Nothing is unlikable in this circus; everything is jam-packed with talent and fantastic thrills. There is a long queue for this one, so make sure you get there early for the front row.
