For His Lordship's entertainment: In August 1717, Handel joined Lord Carnarvon's household as what we would now call composer in residence at Cannons where Johann Christoph Pepusch (b. 1667) was musical director. Little is known of relations between the two composers, but today's concert shows what might have been. John Kitchen, playing Edinburgh University's 1709 Barton harpsichord, collaborates with soprano Sally Carr and Gerry McDonald on woodwind to create a sparkling programme of virtuoso cantatas, featuring obbligato oboe and recorder with keyboard continuo. The recital evokes the milieu of two possibly reluctant 18th-century colleagues.
