Jimeoin - Lovely!

Jimeoin is an act who I can always remember being at the Fringe and other comedy festivals, but have never got round to seeing. Well now I have and I kind of wished I hadn't. I'm positive he is or at least was brilliant, his live DVD is selling well, some of his routines I've seen in gala shows are wonderful, but from tonight's hour of stand up it seems he has lost the spark. Everyone can have a bad day, but sadly for Jimeoin he had one in front of a large audience. While he certainly isn't terrible and there are some wonderfully crafted lines and flashes of genius, he just doesn't quite live up to the hype. If this had been a debut show it would have scraped in with 3 stars, but this lacklustre, slow and often very silent show from a big name act is a disappointment. When the audience are checking their phones more than listening to the act, you know something is wrong.'Lovely' is a vague show drifting from routine to routine, with plenty of observational gags and impressions of faces you do when something goes wrong. Despite the odd strike of brilliance, the laughs don't add up. Finishing on a catchy although not particularly funny song finally put some energy in the room, but sadly this show was far from lovely.

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

Theatre MAD
The Make A Difference Trust fights HIV & AIDS one stage at a time. Their UK and International grant-making strategy is based on five criteria that raise awareness, educate, and provide care and support for the most vulnerable in society. A host of fundraising events, including Bucket Collections, Late Night Cabarets, West End Eurovision, West End Bares and A West End Christmas continue to raise funds for projects both in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.

The Blurb

Stunning world-class stand-up from star of Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, Jason Manford’s Comedy Rocks. No gimmicks, just pure’n’simple great craic. ‘Awesome!’ (List), ‘Inspired ramblings’ (Independent), ‘Sublime’ (Chortle), ‘Brilliant… It gets no better than this… Hilarious!’ (Time Out).
