Jim Jefferies, the acerbic Australian comedian has returned to the U.K where he developed his comedy career. Currently living in L.A, where his success is snowballing, he is back in Britain for the Edinburgh Fringe.
He is no ordinary man, his crude style gaining him attention from both fans and critics.Whilst some prefer to keep a large distance from his highly offensive style of humour, others understand that this is comedy and therefore not to be taken seriously, something Jefferies also reminds the crowd.
His new show, Fully Functional, opened with the introduction of the Guns N Roses smash hit, Welcome to the Jungle. Accompanied with a twirling spotlight and strobe, there could not have been a more appropriate introduction for the macho man.
As a whole, his set could be construed as majorly offensive, with jokes that feature murder, genocide, Christianity and paedophilic priests, AIDS, learning difficulties, sex, rape and race. He manages to cover the most politically controversial and tasteless jokes on the planet, but his outstanding delivery allows him to succeed.Topics such as these can either make someone appear atrocious or funny, it all depends on how they are conveyed. Re-enactments of the same jokes by other comedians simply would not work; this is material that strictly makes sense when delivered by Jim Jefferies.
Perhaps central to the man’s character is his concentration on sex. He seems comfortable talking about crude sexual situations without fear of embarrassment. Importantly, what makes these stories work is that these stories appear genuine, making the shock element greater.
What proves that Jim Jefferies’ crude brand of comedy is effective is the crowd’s hysterical enthusiasm. He is one of the funniest men on the circuit who has worked hard to get to the top. This show is a must-see, but leave the kids and easily offended at home. For those lucky enough to get a ticket, be glad, it’s a lot cheaper than going to see a new age laughter therapist and a lot more effective.
