It's a Mystery! A new one-man show by the creator of Solve-Along-A-Murder-She-Wrote
  • London Fringe

I suppose youre wondering why Ive gathered you all here this evening.

Tim Benzie, the acclaimed creator and host of Solve-Along-A-Murder-She-Wrote presents his new one-man show, a hilarious and moving exploration of the enduring appeal of murder mysteries. It's a Mystery is currently playing at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Tim is proud to bring it to the Royal Vauxhall Tavern this September.

The audience are summoned to the drawing room as Tim takes on the role of detective, examining the clues that drew him to the genre as a child, a journey from Scooby Doo to Encyclopedia Brown via German mystery-puzzle books, to eventually lapping up the entire works of Agatha Christie as a teenager.

The appeal of the genre is investigated like the mystery that it is: to discover what attracts us to the many scene/s of the crime (from quaint villages to exotic locales), why we love the appealing but frequently two-dimensional suspects, and finally how the style maybe helps us deal with the inevitability of yes, death itself.

There is a tenacious theory that in times of societal strife, murder mysteries surge in popularity, and Tim unpacks the notion via stories of his own troubled times, to determine not just why there is a detective in all of us, but ultimately what is the mystery that were all trying to solve.

Funny, touching and showcasing the delight in pop culture minutiae that has made Solve-Along-A-Murder-She-Wrote a cult hit, Its a Mystery will appeal to fans of the genre and anyone whos ever wondered whodunnit (and why).

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

Theatre MAD
The Make A Difference Trust fights HIV & AIDS one stage at a time. Their UK and International grant-making strategy is based on five criteria that raise awareness, educate, and provide care and support for the most vulnerable in society. A host of fundraising events, including Bucket Collections, Late Night Cabarets, West End Eurovision, West End Bares and A West End Christmas continue to raise funds for projects both in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.
