Instructions on How to Cry is a new devised play exploring the science and mystery of emotional tears which appear to be solely present in Homo Sapiens. Mixing clowning, physical comedy and atmospheric live music, the show invites audiences to have fun and celebrate theatre. At the heart of the performance lies a simple question: why do humans cry?The piece uses scientific research on crying as a source for comedy to highlight the way in which humans use crying to connect, regulate emotions and stay alive. The simplicity and mundane platitudes of each instruction/experiment gives way to multiple misunderstandings and creations of surreal physicality between the two female central characters, a scientist, and a subject of research. The show is based on surrealist texts and conversations between director Andrea Cabrera Luna and Professor Sophie Scott, Director of the Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience at UCL.
