Originally from Liverpool, coming to study at Glasgow University in 1986. Widely recognised as one of Scotlands leading human rights campaigners. Solicitor of the Year 2016, Lawyer of the Year 2017. Former Glasgow University Rector. Made legal history in a 1995 civil action against Strathclyde Police for a 1991 racist attack. He has been instructed in some of Scotlands highest-profile cases, including the Sheku Bayoh public inquiry, the 17-year campaign to secure a conviction for the Surjit Singh Chhokar murder and the successful 2018 defence of ex-Catalan minister Professor Clara Ponsati against extradition to Spain.
