Homobesity
  • London Fringe

Homobesity is the sometimes hilarious and sometimes sad story of Connor, who has spent forty years living in a world in conflict with his fat gay body. It's the story of his struggles for self-acceptance and for acceptance from others, where his homosexuality came up against resistance in his Irish Catholic home and school, and where being thin evaded him in a society antagonistic to fat people. He tells the story of finding himself welcomed in communities of straight men and then finding new aspects of himself in the little-known world of gay fat fetishists online and in London, and he explores the highs and lows of his experience of having weight loss surgery.

In this one-man show, which premiered at Brighton Fringe 2022, Connor narrates a series of raw, but also humorous, episodes in his life, showing how his body and the world's reaction to it shaped him as a person. Its a show thats a lot about being fat and a lot about being gay, but its a show that should resonate with anyone who has ever felt that they dont fit in in the world where theyre living.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.
