Henry Paker: Classic Paker

Winner of the 2008 Leicester Comedian of the Year, Henry Paker brings his show Classic Paker to the Fringe to put some surrealist comedy into your life.

Paker's material may not be the most ‘out there’ of comedians at the Fringe, with topics including the various personalities of his wife, holidays and his surname. However it is his observations in these areas that bring the show to life. Let’s be honest, Waitrose is hardly new to being ridiculed and yet Paker still finds the right punchline or comment more often than not to stop the targets feeling tired or old.

What really made Paker's set a little bit different was the element of physical comedy that he added. Rather than having a stand-and-deliver style that so many comedians these days have, he almost acted out jokes. Particular reverence goes to his imitations of his cat which had an uncanny truth to it. Fused with this is an emotive, almost emphatic delivery style which gives a depth to the humour. Another excellent feature of his comedy was his almost effortless fusing of many the topics he had discussed together. This was further emphasised by his very naturally funny interactions with the audience that calmed everyone from the very start.

Sometimes described as a comedian’s comedian, Paker clearly knows how to make even those who are paid to make others chuckle, laugh. However he is one of the few whose style clearly translates to the general masses as well. Genuinely witty and naturally funny, you could do much worse that sitting down for some classic Paker.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.
