Hennessy & Friends: A History of Violence

Hennessy and Friends is a fast paced surreal comedy sketch show. The show features television comedy actors Miranda Hennessy, David Seymour and Steven Shapland under the direction of Natalie Bailey. Together they crammed more sketches into the production than would seem possible in an hour and added a catchy sting that made the transition between scenes sharp, dramatic and light hearted.

The nature of sketch comedy inevitably meant that some scenes were going to be more entertaining than others. For example, their bad mock Russian accents that opened the set could have quickly become tiresome.

Fortunately, the show offered diversity and their best scenes outweighed the less effective sketches. Some of the best scenes were returned to throughout the show. The return of Victoria, a Made in Chelsea esque character played by Hennessy, was a highlight of the performance; Hennessy was always at the centre of the best moments. Another classic scene returned to within the hour was Hennessy and David Seymour acting as a couple who were always outwitting each other in larger than life ways. One of the sketches saw this competitive couple subject each other to surprise birthday kidnapping, taking the surprise element a little too seriously.

Returning to these two respective scenes showed awareness of their best moments and it was excellent to relive them. This show is full of classic comic moments and the trio have created a set that feels ready to be a hit television series.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.
