Catch the dazzling concert marking the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra's Festival debut with Chief Conductor Susanna Mlkki and soloist Andreas Haefliger.
Finlands finest classical ensemble, the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra is also Scandinavias oldest, and was famed for its many performances under the baton of Jean Sibelius. With current Chief Conductor Susanna Mlkki, its a global musical force, celebrated for its sparkling colours and exquisitely detailed, thrilling performances.
Mlkki and the Orchestra bring a rare authenticity to the music of their compatriot Sibelius: his brooding Tapiola is a stirring tribute to Finlands ancient forest spirit. Kaija Saariaho is one of Finlands most brilliant living composers: her magical Vista is inspired by the Californian coastline, in seductive sounds that caress the ear.
Powerful Swiss pianist Andreas Haefliger is the soloist in the piano concerto Gran Toccata by his compatriot Dieter Ammann. Its a rollercoaster ride of energy and virtuosity, combining jazz, drama and unbridled fun.
