  • London Fringe

Join us at The Hope Theatre for The Gangsta Baby University: a fundraiser for the play Gangsta Baby! The Gangsta Baby University is set up to give you an intensive-crash course on navigating and thriving in the creative entertainment industry. Are you a writer? An actor? A budding director? Are you having trouble breaking into the industry or finding the recipe to get your craft just right? Then the Gangsta Baby University fundraiser day is just for you, with each session just 5 to attend! Sunday 7th January, 4pm: Get Loud! - creating gig-theatre workshop, with writer/producer/performer Sam Butters Brought to you by TECTUM Theatre, this one-hourgig-theatre workshop will give you the key foundations on how you can use music to raucously elevate your productions and make your theatre electric with sounds. Led by producer Sam Butters, you will use monologues and scenes and see how music transforms them. The workshop will be followed by a short Q&A on gig-theatre and producing your own work. Sam Butters trained as an actor at Arts Ed - since then he has worked as a writer, actor, producer and founder of Tecum Theatre, helping working-class artists to thrive. Sam has worked across film and stage. He received an OFFIE nomination for his one-man show Hand of God performed, written and produced by himself at the Hope Theatre. As well as featuring in 'I Ain't Dumb' at The Belgrade Theatre, he also starred in 'Sent to Cov' on Sky Arts. Most recently, Sam has received Arts Council funding to R&D a gig-theatre new play, which will combine grime, theatre and the footballing world.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

Theatre MAD
The Make A Difference Trust fights HIV & AIDS one stage at a time. Their UK and International grant-making strategy is based on five criteria that raise awareness, educate, and provide care and support for the most vulnerable in society. A host of fundraising events, including Bucket Collections, Late Night Cabarets, West End Eurovision, West End Bares and A West End Christmas continue to raise funds for projects both in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.
