Workshop facilitated by Olumide Popoola
Most people read or watch stories not so much for plot but for company. In
this creative writing workshop we will explore how to create dynamic and
believable characters.
Participants will watch a film from the Fringe! fest programme in advance. If you book for this workshop, you will receive a link to watch a film at home, so please be prepared to do this before the workshop. Then when we come together for the workshop we will discuss how the character(s) are revealed in the film.
Through writing exercises we will explore how to make characters unique and relatable. This is a small group workshop for 15 participants where we will do some writing and sharing.
Nigerian-German writer Olumide Popoola has published essays, poetry, a
novella, a short story collection, and a play. She holds a PhD in Creative
Writing and curated Berlins (Germany) inaugural international African
Bookfest, Writing in Migration (2018). She is the creator and leader of the
Arts Council funded scheme for emerging LGBTQ+ writers, The Future is Back.
Her critically acclaimed novel When We Speak of Nothing was published by
Cassava Republic Press in 2017. In 2019 Scottish writer Jackie Kay named her
one of ten notable Black and Brown writers in Britain.
