Forgetting [pause] Pinter

Beginning with Pinter being interviewed onstage by a voice from the back of the theatre, we quickly move into an intimate and very involving drama. The first quotation Pinter gives us says a great deal about America. But that is not the subsequent subject. The play that is included here is, Ashes to Ashes, one of his ‘memory plays’ and which has evident connections to Nazi atrocities, but is at the same time suggestive on many levels. Themes include the power of words and the ease with which they can be manipulated, and how people can be manipulated by them. Only one word altered can quite derail a discourse. The ways in which people use power and the ways in which some use the power others have over them are here. Typical Pinter. Still with me?If you go to see this performance you will see a company who make very precise and powerful use of word and gesture. They are able to convey a sense of threat and intimidation and of vulnerability and resistance with the most minimal of means; with no more than a couple of chairs and their words and presence. This is acting of a high standard from a very young company who have ability and maturity that is exceptional given their ages.It was Pinter’s way to make every word and gesture count and be meaningful. This company are very loyal to Pinter in achieving this. You will not regret spending time attending to their sharply focused performance.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.
