Two of the most energetic and invigorating young acts on the circuit today join forces in what promises to be an unforgettable evening of driving, high-octane folk music.
The remarkable rise of energetic trio The Trials of Cato on the UK folk-scene has been the subject of massive critical attention. Dubbed "The Sex Pistols of folk," (John Davis, Led Zeppelin, Gorrilaz) they pay clear homage to the tradition whilst twisting old bones into something febrile and modern, with stomping tunes and captivating stories.
Praised for the diversity of their material and influences, The Trials of Cato live show "invariably stuns audiences wherever they play." (FATEA) Whether plying their trade busking, performing in front of thousands at festivals across Europe, or frequently selling out their own shows, The Trials of Cato have the wind behind them.
Bella, Polly & the Magpies formed in their hometown of York in the autumn of 2017. Initially a duo project, 2018 saw the lineup expand to a quartet, with the original pair joining forces with the Magpies - acclaimed cellist Sarah Smout and fiddle ace Holly Brandon.
Based on a deeply felt musical friendship, they work collaboratively, arranging material led by powerful vocals and glittering instrumental ornamentation. They each draw on their transatlantic influences to create a unique blend of Celtic and bluegrass folk, transporting audiences to distant lands and capturing imaginations with their enthralling live show.
The project has been exceptionally well-received, with the group having performed at Cambridge Folk Festival, Wickham Festival, Towersey Festival, Deer Shed Festival and many more. They released their debut EP at a sold out show at last year's Great Yorkshire Fringe and are currently recording an album set for release in winter 2019.
