1960s Bangladesh. A 19-year old with a decision to make. Does she chase her dream of becoming the first ever woman to compete in, let alone win, the Bangladeshi Rifle Shooting Championship? Or does she accept the proposal of a man who will take her to the UK, and give her family a chance at moving there one day too? 1990s London. Her daughter. Does she fly the nest, searching for her own adventure? Or does she get married, finally putting her ageing mother and traditional community at ease? Here. Now. Her granddaughter. She's broken from the women before her. She couldn't deny her queerness and they couldn't accept it. So now, leading up to her wedding, without anyone else to perform Bengali wedding rituals with her, she must conjure their presence, despite their absence. Flowers, Stars and Conquerors is writer-performer Nusrath Tapadar's debut play, based on stories she heard growing up and re-imaginings of her family's past. It explores the role of culture and legacy in Bengali marriages, and what the consequences of breaking from tradition can look like. It asks whether it's possible to reconstruct your culture after having left it behind for a future you have no roadmap for. LATECOMERS MAY NOT BE ADMITTED.
