Find Your Inner Artiste - FEMFEST 2023
  • Brighton

Ever wondered if you have one lip sync, one silly character, one drag act in you? Specifically inclusive to non-performers, this workshop will see you creating your own short act around the theme of queer self-acceptance and sharing it with the group.

For many of us the idea of coming out is fraught, bringing up difficult conversations with friends and family - a far cry from the original concept of a Debutantes coming out ball, in which she was presented to society saying Im here, Im fabulous and Im available! Yes, that was also a problematic tradition! But what if you could come out in a way that celebrated your queerest self?

Cabaret, or drag, can be anything you want it to be; it helps us explore the outer edges of ourselves and gives voice to a part of us that may have been hidden.

In this workshop we will each create a short performance on the theme of coming out - whatever that means to you - and share it with each other at the end of the session. You will be led through a simple, structured creative process in a supportive environment and the rest of the group will champion your (and their) cabaret acts, whatever you make!

Your performance could be 30 seconds or 5 minutes; it could be a dance dressed as your teenage celebrity crush, a lip sync in a ridiculous costume, a character, a speech or poem, anything. I will send prompts and guidance in advance and our sharing will be just within the workshop group or with a few trusted friends.

Dont be shy! You might just surprise yourself.

Cant wait to meet you,

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

Theatre MAD
The Make A Difference Trust fights HIV & AIDS one stage at a time. Their UK and International grant-making strategy is based on five criteria that raise awareness, educate, and provide care and support for the most vulnerable in society. A host of fundraising events, including Bucket Collections, Late Night Cabarets, West End Eurovision, West End Bares and A West End Christmas continue to raise funds for projects both in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.
