Office Space meets Miranda July: Little Bulb Theatres delightful take on the mundane nine-to-five existence combines Indy humour with quirky performance art.
Within the cubical walls of the Japanese electronics company, Tadashi, Martin and Ruth live separate but surprisingly similar lives. Martin is a bumbling loner, fobbed off with sideways promotions and left alone at the office Christmas party. Ruth is a driven but socially awkward boring old fart who lives with her mother and craves intimacy. Martins excitable nature leads him to take on the challenge of making 1000 origami cranes in exchange for a wishsomething he thinks a fair exchange. Ruth on the other hand, fills herself with the black liquid of death and finally plucks up the courage to go on a date with the unseen Jeremy.
The resulting play is a gorgeously sweet yet bitterly sad glimpse of the monotony of life. The two actors play off one another perfectly, though their characters never actually meet. Claire Beresford plays Ruth as a more successful but less outgoing version of Bridget Jones and Alex Scott is quite hilarious as the eccentric Martin. With moments of bizarre yet lovely choreography, this is a beautiful, part-farcical, part-tragic comedy of life.
