(opens on May 29) Eugene Onegin is a shallow and useless man. But his character has inspired a remarkable novel in prose, a celebrated opera and now a stage version of nearly four hours. Not bad for a story about a provincial slacker. Forty-five members of the Vakhtangov State Academic Theater of Russia bring their adaptation, studded with folk songs, to City Center as part of the Cherry Orchard Festival.
