Loosely inspired by the Magdalen Laundries Scandal, 'Dreamphone' is a touching and witty new play exploring friendship, loss and ownership.Aisling and Saoirse have been bored all of their lives. Aisling is tired of being woken for mass on a Sunday, watching her Mother fold her Father's shirts by day and drown her sorrows in a bottle of whisky by night. Saoirse, having recently lost her mother, and been rejected by her Protestant boyfriend, Stevie, wants to be free. When they're approached by the Church with an 'opportunity' to run away to London, without telling their parents, they decide to make the leap of faith.Recruited by their local priest, the authoritative Father Malcolm, to work for a 'magazine company', run by the aloof and glamorous Mrs Penhurst, the two girls find themselves working without payment. As their idealised vision of London begins to unravel, and the reason for Mrs Penhurst's special interest in Saoirse becomes uncertain, friendship, belief, aspiration and loss are examined in this humorous and tender play.
