Candide: The Optimist
  • Edinburgh Fringe

It is 255 years since Voltaire published his scathing satire on Liebnitzian optimism, yet it remains as fresh as it was in 1759. We may no longer be as ready to believe that 'all is for the best in this best of all possible worlds', yet politicians still try to tell us so. Adapted and performed by Dave Nelder, this one man play highlights Candide remains relevant to todays issues; from bankers, corruption, austerity and inequality, to wars and religion. Even the Scottish independence debate gets a look in. 'We must cultivate our garden'.
