Bouncers

As sure as you’ll be pestered by at least 25 student groups flyering on the Royal Mile, the fringe always ensures a good number of Godber revivals, frequently attempted by amateur groups with varying degrees of success. This young group from Orkney came second in the Scottish Community Drama Association’s one act festival with their abridged ‘90’s remix’ version – a significant achievement for the young all-male cast.

The four actors take on all of the roles, alternating between a group of lads out on the piss; a lively girl’s night out; and, of course, the eponymous bouncers. This is a great idea, but it doesn’t always quite work. While the boys are hilarious as the girls, this involves camping it up to such as degree that it detracts from some of the messages and poignancy of the original Godber. It also felt as if the space was not yet being used to its greatest effect – the studio in Zoo Southside has seats on three sides and yet all of the action was presented to those sitting in the front – meaning that those of us on the edges found it very difficult to get the full effect – particularly of the facial expressions.

That said, this was a fun performance. The cast work well together, are clearly very well rehearsed, and show great enthusiasm and comic potential.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

The Blurb

We welcome you to a vision of the modern urban nightlife, to stag-nights and hen-dos, to drunken crying girls and gallons of booze. One of Scotland's best young casts tackles Godber's classic black comedy. 'Confident and sophisticated,' SCDA judges.
