Algorithms and artificial intelligence can determine your mortgage application, drive a car, find you a soulmate and even diagnose your health conditions. Dr Mhairi Aitken (Newcastle University) asks: do we really need human intelligence anymore? Computers could replace your doctor; find cures to rare conditions; tell schools which children need extra support; tell prospective employers which candidates are lowest risk; identify illegal immigrants from scanning their faces; they could even decide where drones should drop bombs. Computers might know what they can do, but who can say what they should do?
