SHARING RESEARCH & ARTISTRY BY/WITH/FOR/ABOUT GLOBAL MAJORITY COMMUNITIESBLACADEMIA is a unique mix of conference, chat show and TED Talk infused with interactive performance, screenings and visual art. This pioneering 2-day event introduces creative presentations of socially engaged research and community-based projects. Awarding-winning special guests over the 2 days include actor, theatre director, teacher and activist Josette Bushell-Mingo OBE; writer, playwright, artist/curator and scholar Michael McMillan; photographer Vanley Burke; and photojournalist, filmmaker and producer Cathy Hassan. The line up also includes presentations by Adriana Lord, Bobby Brown, Kaia Allen-Bevan, Manjot Dhaliwal, Mariam Hussein, Nyasha Maposa, Odi Oquosa, Pauline Rutter, River Sweeney and Professor Shawn Naphtali Sobers.The state-of-the-art Ironworks Studios provides a relaxed platform for critical debate, knowledge exchange and intercultural dialogue for academics and non-academics from all walks of life - welcoming anyone interested in issues surrounding social justice, cultural awareness and lived experiences from rich and varied perspectives.THIS EVENT IS PART OF THE CULTURE CONNEX FESTIVAL SEASON IN COLLABORATION WITH URBANFLO, PACE, BRIGHTON FRINGE, BRIGHTON PRIDE, IRONWORKS STUDIOS & BN1 ARTS

Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

Theatre MAD
The Make A Difference Trust fights HIV & AIDS one stage at a time. Their UK and International grant-making strategy is based on five criteria that raise awareness, educate, and provide care and support for the most vulnerable in society. A host of fundraising events, including Bucket Collections, Late Night Cabarets, West End Eurovision, West End Bares and A West End Christmas continue to raise funds for projects both in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.
