Bellissima: All-Female a Cappella from The Oxford Belles

The Oxford Belles are a small set of seven, performing upon a dauntingly massive black stage but as soon as they burst into song they fill the entire space with life. The group have put together a staggering show full of vivacity, fun and also incredible professionalism that left the audience with a smile on their face.Whilst their singing is impeccable and never falters - at least to this reviewer - their choreography is not as strong, though it never threw them. The girls all have beautiful voices but unfortunately there is no single voice that really punches you hard in the gut which, considering the amount of R&B they covered, was a bit of a problem. The individual performances are enjoyable but some songs lack an oomph that is really needed. There was also a distinct absence of swagger in the soloist’s performances. Whilst they were clearly having a great time and seemed completely comfortable, they have chosen a set of modern pop songs about seduction and sexiness - amongst them hits by the Pussycat Dolls, Lady Gaga and a large amount of Rihanna - that lacks something of the original performer’s moxie. The impressive moments came when they gave up replicating Glee and instead illustrated what their voices could naturally do. Their clever arrangements of songs are the best bits in a show that’s difficult to find obvious flaws in. Their version of Snow Patrol’s ‘Run’ in particular sends goosebumps over my entire body, and their tight harmonies and precision to their versions of ‘Toxic’ and ‘Sway’ are a joy to listen to. One would have enjoyed something a bit more peculiar however; not obscure, but merely a hit one had not heard in a while. However, there is always next time.

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.
