Barry Cryer and Ronnie Golden - Going Gaga

If growing old quietly was the status quo nowadays then clearly no one informed Barry Cryer and Ronnie Golden. Their show Going Gaga covers not only the idea of getting older but also brings in current events and even so called big topics such as assisted suicide.

Cryer of I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue fame brings to the show his deadpan delivery and humour with the majority of his jokes in the performance. However, Goldman is by no means carried by Cryer as he brings musical ability and a tendency for the dramatic. The combination of these components is perfectly demonstrated in a song where Goldman is playing the guitar and singing passionately in Spanish whilst Cryer dryly translates into colloquial English for the audience. It is this mixture of the two’s talent that make this show. Aiding the duo was a projector behind them that often flashed up funny images to compliment the song that was being played. Whilst an amusing touch, visibility for some portions of the audience was a definite issue lessening its effect.

Although not breaking any new comic ground Going Gaga’s original songwriting and sharp wit means that it feels fresh. Whilst by no means cerebral humour, Going Gaga is an hour of good fun and that can be hard to find.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.
