Barbershopera: The Three Musketeers

Join Athos, Porthos and Aramis as they take on a new recruit and set out to rescue the King’s golden plums!

In this wonderfully camp late-night operetta jokes fly and genders bend, whilst a fiercely strong cast of four consistently dazzle the audience.

Barbershopera consists of three men and one woman, all of whom are brilliant actors and even finer singers. The show features extremely camp and entertaining songs throughout and often two members provide a musical backdrop to scripted conversation. The skill of these singers is unbelievable. Clearly true professionals, at no point does it seem like they are making any effort whatsoever. Intonation was flawless - a rare feat. All the songs are original and feature exquisite harmonies, which are magnificently maintained throughout despite some very physical choreographic routines.

The script is wonderfully camp, full of jokes and double-entendres. There are so many characters, cleverly and convincingly played out between the small cast of four. A basic knowledge of French will aid an understanding of some of the comedy, but is not essential. To gain that elusive fifth star, if anything more humour could be added. There were occasional lags in the motion of the show, because it was easy to forget that the cast were in fact singing, not acting to a CD. When considering the ‘play’ alone, it is a bit simple, but as long as you remember that there is also a soundtrack going on, the whole experience is truly magical!

This show is highly recommended and thoroughly worth the price of the ticket. Go forth and tell one and all.

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.
