Axis of Awesome: Songs in the Key of Awesome

The Axis of Awesome, Australia’s most tolerated comedy rock trio are back to they present their new show ‘Songs in the Key of Awesome’ in the Wine Bar at the Gilded Balloon. The Axis have built up a strong fan base for their Edinburgh shows and its not hard to see why - they have boundless energy and great rapport with each other and the audience. There are a lot of old fans come to see them again and by the time we leave there are lots of new fans too.The trio is made up of Jordon, Benny and Lee. Jordon, the lead singer and Jack Black look alike has huge charisma (and some excellent moves which are making me giggle just now all over again). Benny the keyboard player and all-round musical genius has a wonderful voice and plays the straight man to the many jokes about his stature, and Lee, guitar player, is tall, cute and silly. Their mix of banter and music works extremely well and is held together with excellent musicianship, vocals and strong writing. They don’t just stick to rock, presenting a range of musical styles, from boy bands to cheesy dance music. And they go off script - a heckle during the build up for a song about religion (‘does anyone here love God? Well you’re going to hate this song’) is handled brilliantly. Its great fun and the audience are swept along with the infectious good humour. I loved the boy band parody and the now famous four-chord mega-mix (did you know all pop records have the same 4-chord progression? You do now) but a special shout out has to be made for the car song and the marvellously inventive KFC song. Awesome? You better believe it.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.
