When Leonie first comes to the stage for Anybody Waitin’?, it isn’t quite clear if she’s part of the audience or the performance, as she’s dressed for a night out, and this is the Silk Nightclub. But soon she admits to us that she’s there to help her friend, Paula, get a man. On her own, Leonie easily sets the crowd laughing, but once Paula arrives, all bets are off as to how bizarre their humour might get.
With moves that would look right at home in a Lady Gaga concert, Ponydance not only brings talent to the forefront, but also a brilliant comedic flair and tricks up their sleeves. When they spring into a dance number it comes from nowhere and without much motivation, much like in a West End musical, but it’s probably the most fun you’ve had in years.
The saga of ‘will Paula get a man?’ continues, and just when the laughter might have reached a peak, add Brian and Dwayne to the mix and you’ve got not just a girls’ night out, but girls and gay boys’ night out: and still it gets funnier. Their inventive costume change set to Robert Palmer’s ‘Addicted to Love’ is probably the best part of the night. Or maybe it’s all of the gags with the pop-up changing tent. Or the dance-off spilling into the audience. In any case, every moment of this hour with Ponydance is brilliantly entertaining and hilarious.
