Andrew Maxwell's Supernatural

Andrew Maxwell's been around a bit, and is here to tell us about it in his new show.

Persistent hecklers were nicely brushed aside, but given that a large part of his set covers a gig he did this year inside a maximum security prison, he's more than used to tough audiences. Couple this with his entertaining material about filming TV performances for Sinn Fein activists and the Shankhill Road UDA on the same night (two very separate gigs you understand), and the hecklers were lucky to still be walking.

He varies the pace of his show nicely, from energetically bouncing around the stage, to a calm intimate chat on the joys of Ryanair; having a bit of fun with Irish Customs officials and entertaining uses for hotel bibles.

Andrew Maxwell is a great entertainer, reminding me at times of an updated Dave Allen just sat on his stool watching the world go by and doing observational stuff about the strangeness and silliness of religion. He builds the atmosphere nicely to a great five-star set – try to catch him before his show deservedly sells out.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.
