Andrew Lawrence is a young, talented stand-up comedian who has already had two successive if.comedy award nominations. His new show is ostensibly about how ambition and hard work can ruin your life, but is actually a meandering ramble covering everything from his birth to Osama Bin Laden to Madeleine McCann.
At the beginning of his act he immediately gets the audience on his side by attacking his own appearance; his weedy and unmuscular body; his face; his ginger hair. He even comments unfavourably on his man parts and his ginger pubes. He then takes us through his childhood, his parents ambitions for him and his working life prior to becoming a comedian, all delivered in a deadpan manner and with none of the unnecessary shouting which some stand-ups favour.
The show includes references to many sensitive topics including child abduction, racism, cancer and, of course, sex, so anyone likely to be easily offended should probably avoid it.
On the night I saw the show two, apparently drunk, women had to be asked to leave and the husband of one of them left at the same time claiming to be offended by some of the material. Interestingly, the other husband stayed for the rest of the show, so he was clearly enjoying it. Lawrence dealt with the whole episode very well, without getting at all annoyed or disturbed. Hes probably dealt with much worse in the past. He is clearly very confident in himself and his material and very much at ease with an audience.
A very funny show. You should take this chance to see a future star.
