Abby, Vera and Sue

The New Quorndon Shakespeare Company present a new musical comedy, written by Sharon Scott with music and lyrics by Phil Law and Nigel Scott, Abby Vera and Sue.

The action takes place in and around a mother a toddler group, full of the ‘disparate and desperate’. It tackles serious issues, but at heart it is a warm, entertaining tale of a group of women finding their own voice(s) in a number of ways. A mix of women are represented here – there's Abby of the title, hypochondriac; Vera, Abby's mother-in-law; Sue, an older mum; Tracey, a single mum; Holly, prefect mum who seems like she has it all; and Jennifer, a young mum who is pregnant again. They are joined by a cast of other excellent characters around the toddler's group – watch out for the 'blooming' of the janitor, and for Tara, the new age empowerment therapist, who provide many of the laughs.

The original score is performed with real gusto. The musical numbers have also been nicely choreographed, although the cast sometimes struggle with the small stage. There is a mix of voices, some stronger than others. Women of a certain age will absolutely adore this show, with its mix of the comedy and serious issues about coping with being a woman at various stages of life. And everyone else will find it an entertaining and moving hour and a half.

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.
