A Little Light Theatre

Two short plays by the same playwright Paul Richards collectively titled A Little Light Theatre had a lightness of touch that brought ordinary people facing dramatic episodes to life. The first short play called Breakers related to a man who has just found out he is to become a father. He struggles to feel optimistic about this circumstance to which his best friend tries to rally him. However, more information emerges shifting the dynamics in their relationship and the play follows the implications of this alteration. Although the setting up of the conflict was well paced, the ending felt rushed and could have done with more dramatic tension and convincing resolution. The second play Drop Me With Dignity revolved around three disparate characters who share an office and squabble, show compassion and share a laugh by turns. Faced with redundancy the three employees go through a range of emotions as they face the scary prospect of life outside their known environment. The humour was understated but hit the mark as did the office dynamics, feeling freakily familiar I found it incredibly entertaining. The playwright Paul Richards said afterwards that this was experimentation for him, which I think he has pulled off well in Drop Me With Dignity, striking a chord with the current zeitgeist.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.
