A-Haunting We Will Go

Venue 2 Venue, a young company of GCSE and A-level drama students present Tim Kelly’s A-Haunting we will go. It is billed as a comedy drama and certainly has elements as both.

Norma Corwin made a childhood vow to spend a night alone in The Inn of the Three Sisters, a local hotel where an unsolved murder took place. As it is due to be demolished to make way for a motorway in the morning, this evening is her last chance. No sooner is Norma left alone than the spirits (or something else) starts moving. Soon the Inn is nearly as busy as a motorway, with a disturbed patient and her nurse, kidnappers, spiritualists, guests and ghosts.

The show will appeal particularly to the young (and young at heart) who have been brought up on a diet of Famous Five and Scooby Doo. You know that something is going on at the hotel, but are left guessing just what it is until the end. The performances are good, with Archie Bagnall with particularly good stage presence as Tom, and Thea Cantelli’s interpretation of Miss Crisp adds humour. On occasion some of the accents do seem unnecessarily forced and the show may have gained something from allowing the cast to speak more naturally rather than struggle to maintain an accent.

Overall this is a fun tale told by an enthusiastic cast.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.
