#EdFringe17 Comedy Q&A: Betty Grumble

Betty Grumble: Love and Anger (or Sex Clown Saves the World Again!) is a show that almost defies description. He talk to sex clown, wild woman and surreal showgirl, the award-winning, head-spinning Betty Grumble.

Annie Sprinkle’s sensual worship of sex and sexecology makes me wanna come more and harder

Hi Betty, tell me about your Edinburgh show.

The show is a ritualistic flesh riot. It’s a cabaret of rage, love making and total beauty.

What does Edinburgh mean to you?

Edinburgh is a chance to connect. It’s a wild convention of wyrdos and magic makers. It’s a kinky mistress and exercise in endurance.

Who inspires you and why?

I am inspired by the liberated, punk-ing spirit of Wild Womanhoods. Annie Sprinkle’s sensual worship of sex and sexecology makes me wanna come more and harder. Her and artists like her teach us that Pleasure is a radical act.

Describe your best or worst experiences on stage.

The best is when the line between artist and audience drops away and the whole room becomes a whirling mass of bodies. That’s the best and if you’re lucky, it happens often. Beam me up!

Describe your best or worst review.

Real life connections with people post show. Nothing beats real, unfiltered, unregulated connection. The hearts a real-talking critic.

If you weren’t a performer, what would you be?

An entomologist.

What was the last book you read?

Little Birds - Anais Nin

Why Love and Anger?

To quote a citation on Aizen Myoo (A Goddess of Love from Japan) ‘Penetrating Love…. or Anger… reminds us of the power to transform desire and passion into compassion.’ Love and Anger is a mantra I use to channel my feelings of helplessness towards a world that seems corrupt beyond repair. Love & Anger lets us into each other’s feelings. All pain and all beauty are connected.

Imagine that the BBC have asked you to produce a primetime show. What would it be and who else would be involved?

It would be ECOSEXUALS UNITE and David Attenborough, Annie Sprinkle and Beth Stephens and a whole gang of ecosexuals would travel the world making love to her. Peaches would do the soundtrack.

How does one describe Betty Grumble? No really, I’m at a loss. I can throw out words like, obscene beauty queen; sex clown; absurdist stripper; ecosexual satirist, but none of them really do justice to her magnificence...

Since you’re here…

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.
