Brighton Insider - Living the High Life

If the new i360 on Brighton seafront has inspired you to raise your gaze or you’re suddenly feeling the need to quit your job and run away with the circus, then it's time to check out the aerial artistry this year’s Brighton Fringe.

As sexy as burlesque, as beautiful as ballet and with an extra helping of danger to add to the mix

As sexy as burlesque, as beautiful as ballet and with an extra helping of danger to add to the mix, Brighton Fringe’s circus acts will inspire a palpable sense of awe and produce a symphony of audience gasps and cheers. So don’t miss out!

Helen, Sweet Venues, 17-19 May 13:30, 16, 19 May 18:00 17-18 May 19:30

A perfect introduction to the genre is Helen. Described as “a powerful, contemporary take on the myth of Helen of Troy”, this show is the exquisite combination of aerial performance and narrative physical theatre. From the performers who brought us Bacchic, the Actors of Dionysius are once again set to stun audiences with their beautiful cross genre performance.

Come Fly with Me, Brighton Spiegeltent, 22 May 21:00

If Helen leaves you wanting more, then the purest display of the genre in this year’s Fringe is definitely going to be Come fly with me on 22 May. Les Femmes Circus are hosting this one-off fabulous flying circus with their guests from the Spiegeltent family. With Head First Acrobats from Australia, Circo Pitanga from Switzerland and Brighton’s very own Kitty Peels, expect to be dazzled by their flexible forays and plenty of dancing in the air.

High Top Circus Showcase, Brighton Spiegeltent, 2-3 June 16:00

By this time you should be well and truly enamored by the highflyers and circus folk that are entertaining our May evenings away. With aerial arts fast becoming the most popular alternative fitness classes, Brighton Fringe will not leave you hanging.

If you want to see who the next top acts are, why not check out the High Top Circus Showcase at Brighton Spiegletent. These youthful, up-and-coming exhibitionists will thrill you with fabulous performances from aerialists to hoopers, jugglers to acrobats and much more... we can't wait to see what they’ve got in store for us and neither will you.

Bromance, The Old Market, 12, 17-18 May 19:30 13-14 May 19:00 14-15 May 14:30

The award-winning Barely Methodical Troupe will bring to Brighton this year their very own take on a good old fashioned Bromance. But wait, this is not football down the pub on a Saturday! With acrobatics and daring Cyr wheel stunts, this show is anything but. Without a beer belly in sight, these guys are at the absolutely peak of physical fitness and are set to astound with their cutting-edge physical heroics, Parkour and B-Boying.

Funny, exhilarating and poignant, this crowd-pleaser of a show is perfect for an outing with friends and family.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this article has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

Theatre MAD
The Make A Difference Trust fights HIV & AIDS one stage at a time. Their UK and International grant-making strategy is based on five criteria that raise awareness, educate, and provide care and support for the most vulnerable in society. A host of fundraising events, including Bucket Collections, Late Night Cabarets, West End Eurovision, West End Bares and A West End Christmas continue to raise funds for projects both in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.
