Barstar Of The Day: Matt Parker offers psychology with his White Russian

Richard is back on the trail seeking out the Barstar Of The Day; our tribute to the unsung heroes who keep us refreshed during the Festival Fringe. Each venue is recommended by one of the previous Barstars. As this is the first of the 2019 season we thought we’d make a slight departure from that rule and introduce the new Gilded Balloon in Chamber’s St. (Venue 24), formerly C main. The vast bar has been completely redesigned and is now a sparklingly spacious pink and white affair with table and chairs in the main body and padded wall seating around the corners.

The first year he describes as ‘a barrel of uncontrollable fun’

It’s worth taking a look at any time but especially before and after a show.

Name: Matt Parker

Age: 23

Bar: The Johnnie Walker Lounge at Gilded Balloon, Patter Hoose

Background: Born and went to school in Edinburgh before reading psychology at the University of Glasgow. That lasted five years. The first year he describes as ‘a barrel of uncontrollable fun’ which ultimately lengthened the time he took to graduate, after which he did the West Highland Way from Glasgow to Fort William, collecting blisters, bug bites and beautiful memories. He’s now dropped into ‘the abyss of life’ doing bar work and volunteering for the Samaritans and also Open Door as a dementia health carer.

Ambition: To become a clinical psychologist (matter how long it takes!).

Favourite Drink: White Russian (the more extravagant and sickeningly sweet the better - think Nutella or mint chocolate chip). If you’re also a fan go to Lebowskis it’s pretty much all, so he says.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this article has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

Theatre MAD
The Make A Difference Trust fights HIV & AIDS one stage at a time. Their UK and International grant-making strategy is based on five criteria that raise awareness, educate, and provide care and support for the most vulnerable in society. A host of fundraising events, including Bucket Collections, Late Night Cabarets, West End Eurovision, West End Bares and A West End Christmas continue to raise funds for projects both in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.
