Barstar Of The Day: Hannah regards Brass Monkey as the coolest pub in Edinburgh.

Richard pops round the corner from his last venue to a place renowned for its tradition of providing a ‘relaxed beer-supping, movie-watching’ environment. The back room has beds where customers can recline and watch classic movies and at this time of year see the odd show. Another room has board games, a dartboard and an arcade machine. Truly quirky! It also has a sister pub on Leith Walk with the same name.

Name: Hannah Sutherst

Age: 21

Bar: Brass Monkey. 14 Drummond Street, Edinburgh, EH8 9TU

Background: Born in Newcastle upon Tyne and went to school there. Around the age of 14 she started playing guitar in the clubs and pubs with her grandfather who used to hang out with buskers and other performers. Inevitably she ended up working behind the bar not long after she’d turned seventeen. Illegal but fun! At eighteen she began her studies at the University of Edinburgh reading English Literature. The

Brass Monkey became her local and she regarded it as the coolest pub in Edinburgh. She handed in her CV to work there and waited six months for a vacancy to appear. She dropped out of Uni and became the duty manager and first-aider at the pub. That proved to be life-changing and she started training for a new career.

Ambition: To be a nurse

Favourite Drink: Caol Ila single Malt Whisky.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this article has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

Theatre MAD
The Make A Difference Trust fights HIV & AIDS one stage at a time. Their UK and International grant-making strategy is based on five criteria that raise awareness, educate, and provide care and support for the most vulnerable in society. A host of fundraising events, including Bucket Collections, Late Night Cabarets, West End Eurovision, West End Bares and A West End Christmas continue to raise funds for projects both in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.
