‘I never do half-hearted birthday messages on Facebook… I am not going to insult someone’s intelligence by pretending I remember it or that I actually wanted to see them!’ This rings uncomfortably true within this piece devised by East15 students. The play highlights the fickle behaviour of a group of school friends who reunite for a night out after returning from their separate paths at university, gap years, or stay-at-homes, and their respective judgements of one another’s decisions. The piece is a very low-key conversational mix of characters that come very close to caricatures, but find themselves in very relatable scenarios. ‘Zoe’s a slag, Michael’s gay as anything, Patrick’s a cock, Jess is wasted, Kate’s clueless and Will... Poor Will. Yes, you know them. We all know them’. In this entertaining if unflattering portrait of British middle-class youths, a question is asked: should some friends stay confined to Facebook?
The acting is at a very high standard and there is no weak link amongst this promising cast. However, the actor playing Patrick must be especially commended for his impeccable comic timing. Although little actually seems to happen, this comedy is very natural and isn’t just self-gratifying teenage drama, as there are morals at stake.
