Zipping through all of Greek mythology in an hour and a half is quite a lot of fun when it is presented by a company of student actors who tackle the task with enthusiasm; it is rather endearing that they come across as a bunch of kids who don't know quite what they've let themselves in for.
The script - written by Jay Hopkins and John Hunter - contains some marvellous lines: Zeus explains that he wants to go out and meet women saying ‘if that makes an animal of me, so be it!’ and, when Theseus brags about killing the Minotaur, he is put down with the words ‘you punched a cow’.
There are also a number of contemporary references and, while it is funny to compare Poseidon to Aquaman, turning the Trojans into Nazis does not work quite that well. A rather unnecessary talent show theme seems to be running throughout the show, while a sudden turn towards American style sports broadcasting felt a bit out of place.
On the whole the performances were good, although parts of the narration were not delivered loudly enough. All the actors played multiple roles, but some of them didn't appear to be able to switch between different characters. The staging is handled well considering the venue restrictions, with good use made of the few props available.
This is a fast-paced, wonderfully silly and amusing show.
