Tom Jones was born to be hanged. This dramatisation of the 18th-century novel portrays the bawdy, racy plot and raucous characters that made Henry Fielding famous. Tom, the ward of Squire Allworthy, is in love with his beautiful neighbour, Sophia. Although Sophia's father envies Tom for his reputation as a brawling, womanizing, thieving daredevil, he wouldn't consider allowing his daughter to marry the scoundrel. Instead, Sophia is betrothed to Blifil, Allworthy's sniveling heir. Since Tom's seduced by most women and nearly murdered by all men, it's no surprise to find him heading to the gallows.
