The Arts Barge Project Presents…The Great Yorkshire Swing!

The Arts Barge project knows how to turn a dreary, wet Sunday night into a fun filled extravaganza. Full of Lindy Hop dancers and a full piece swing band, this vibrant ensemble transports you back to the swing era of the 1930/40s and it is impossible not to want to be involved.

This is a great experience for all ages. If dancing really isn’t your thing then there is enjoyment to be had just listening to the fabulous swing band and watching the professionals go through their set routines and showing you how it should be done.

And this is exactly what you are encouraged to do from the get go. Everyone is invited to join in and learn the basic steps. Even if you have two left feet and dance like your dad, you’ll pick it up in no time. The Lindy Hop is full on fun and don’t be worried that you’ll feel like a wallflower if you’ve turned up on your own. There are more than enough people on standby to partner you and to help you to shake your tail feather!

This is a great experience for all ages. If dancing really isn’t your thing then there is enjoyment to be had just listening to the fabulous swing band and watching the professionals go through their set routines and showing you how it should be done. This is an evening where you are transported back to a different era, where the rhythm and blues livens your soul and the dancing takes you back to its Harlem roots. If you are looking for a different night out in York then this is something you should definitely check out.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

Theatre MAD
The Make A Difference Trust fights HIV & AIDS one stage at a time. Their UK and International grant-making strategy is based on five criteria that raise awareness, educate, and provide care and support for the most vulnerable in society. A host of fundraising events, including Bucket Collections, Late Night Cabarets, West End Eurovision, West End Bares and A West End Christmas continue to raise funds for projects both in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.
