Any aspiring young actors in Edinburgh could do a lot worst that go see Hertfordshire based Big Spirit Youth Theatre's production of 'Teechers'. Simply put, this cast of 14-18 year old put in the finest comic performance from their age group I've ever seen at the Fringe.John Godber's play depicts life at a modern comprehensive school, with the arrival of new drama teacher Mr Nixon causing a bit of a stir with the adults and pupils alike. Though the original play is written with only three actors playing the 20 or so roles, it also accommodates a larger cast, so here we have 12 talented youngsters performing the wide variety of parts. They're clearly having a ball playing the highly caricatured teachers, from eccentric Head Mistress Mrs Parry, to the military-like Deputy Head Mr Basford. The pupils are also hilariously portrayed, with school bully/stud Oggy practically stealing the show.Like an episode of Grange Hill sponsored by Red Bull, the energy of these kids is off the scale. Every face is full of expression, and every movement has purpose in this fast paced show. There are no weak links in the 12 strong cast, but the highlight without a doubt is Josh Sharpe, whose skill at physical comedy acting was impeccable. With kids flying on and off the stage left, right and centre, it can sometimes be difficult to keep up with the plot, but who cares about plot in a show this fun! These kids have it all, projection, movement, comic timing, and a great understanding of what they're doing.
